Harry's Avon 3 piece G33588 date please

Post by Surrey Martin »

Gents
Can anyone date this rod for me . It was purchased of a well known website and will be gently restored but any info is appreciated. It seems that the whole cane with split cane composite rods with G prefix are difficult but any info would help.
Cheers

Yes I have seen the charts but they do not show the serial numbers . It appears that the 33 is a bit later than the numbers listed . Hence the question.

Well it appears to be after 1955. However ------ Note:- Hardy FWK Wallis Avon were made between 1934 and 1953 - according to Turners Guide.

The following rods carried on until 1955:- Wallis All Round: Lightweight Match: Ideal Roach: General.

These - according to Turners - were only followed by the "Expert" from 1955 - 62 - all of them made from the Bamboo/split bamboo combination.

This is the only mention of dating for "Prefix G" that I have seen.

It would be great if anyone else could confirm or add the above?

Using the existing listings assuming production levels constant makes it well within 1957.

Interesting - as they allegedly only made them until 1953! Did Hardy still make them after '53?

Was the "G" prefix - "just a number" - and not specific to a date albeit the rod ceased production in '53 - allegedly?

So many probables - currently without a definitive answer! Does the prefix matter?

I have a G numbered Hardy marked only as an Avon-no Wallis mentioned . Don't have its number to hand but c 1955 with an early hollow glass tip section. Whole and split cane
A different model perhaps ?

Thanks for your interest and you can see why I am confused ( it doesn't take much ) . So are we all saying its 1955 ish ? There is no Wallis mentioned just Avon !

Any other theories ?

I will re-look at just "Avon" in Turners and see if I can find anything different! Intriguing mystery!
