That is bloody fascinating. Never heard of this before. Nice one.

I am new to this forum and wondering if anyone, perhaps Rod Turner, can shed any light. I have a John Holt Schooling greenheart rod, 12' long, with porcelain rings, and bearing the number 2 on the brass Allcocks end cap. The No.2 referred to in the list above is shown as 9' long.

Hi,
Welcome. Hope this helps - some pics from Allcocks 1915 catalogue showing all the Schooling rods and reels. The original images have been reduced by Tinypic but pm me with an email address and I'll send the high resolution ones.
Cheers,
Dok

Here's a couple of patents on for a lead and the other for rod fittings. :Hat:

Yes, you're right. Thanks very much, very interesting. I don't have a matching spinning reel - the only ones of that era are a 'J.Enwright & Co, Castleconnell', and a 'Forrest's Patent adjustable drag reel' by Forrest & Co. Kelso, both of which are fly reels. These must have belonged to my step-grandfather. I must have a look among the baits etc. to see if there are any Schooling ones.
Image

PS my step-grandfather died in 1924, which is why the rod does not appear to have had much use.

Here are the original patent documents for Schoolings reel fitting:

I had thought him to be an Allcocks employee but I see his address is given as Twickenham, Middlesex!

The patent for his lead gives the same address:

Perhaps Allcocks had a reputation for taking on board and manufacturing the inventions of others, then? We have this chap and Seb Coe's father who lived nearby, both having patents applied for in conjunction with Allcocks.

I had hoped to find something on the Felton Crosswind, but no luck so far.
