Allcocks Superb
Hello again, in my introduction a few days ago I mentioned a rod I had just bought, well here are some photos and details. Also a request for suggestions as I have not had major surgery to any rod before.
It is an Allcocks Superb 10' Split Cane two piece carp rod which I believe was made around 1964. In reasonable condition but has been tinkered with and needs some attention. As a bonus it has original bag although a bit tatty.
Firstly it seems to be a few inches short which makes me suspect the end has suffered a break at some point and the non original tip ring used as a replacement. Pretty ugly and definitely on its way out.
The butt ring has also been re whipped in a strange colour combination and wrapped in a sellotape type material, although could just be thick varnish.
As this only cost £16 from a well known online auction site and is never going to be worth a fortune due to shortened tip section, I do not intend spending a fortune on it. There is a similar example on offer at the moment for the silly price of £250. or am I really out of touch and these are worth more than good MkIV's?
My gut tells me to find a couple of vintage agate/ceramic lined rings to replace the tip and butt. The existing butt ring is in good condition but looks as if it would be more at home on a beach caster. I know this makes it even less original but honestly that is not an issue for me. I will be using this rod next summer and looks/originality are not high on my wish list on this occasion.
I will probably try to fix myself but as an alternative would appreciate any comments about the way forward and suggestions for who could do this work and what it might cost.
Regards
Andy

Re: Allcocks Superb
Good Afternoon Andy
I have an Allcocks Avon Superb which is similar in many respects to the Superb and it would appear to me that the butt ring is the correct original but that the tip ring is certainly not and if it uses the same tip ring as my Avon Superb then it would have been an unlined ring.
All the same a very fine rod and for the price you paid an absolute snip.
Trust this helps.

Source a good matching top ring and get the rod out for a few outings. You will know then how far to refurb the wand; if the rod suits you its always another project awaiting.Getting to involved just delays the pleasure. Either way you cant loose, Well done on a top find.

Re: Allcocks Superb
I too have an Avon Superb. The whipping for the butt ring seems to be from a "Forcarp" Williams rod - ? But see below.
The butt and tips rings for the Carp Superb according to the 1966 catalogue should be 'Aqualite' lined rings. And the whippings 'two tone red black'. The whipping colour and ring type shown in the photos seems identical to my Avon Superb - ?
The tip ring is a lined Fuji type and out of place.

Re: Allcocks Superb
I will add on Allcocks Superb Range which please add/amend if incorrect. I can find the following Superbs ---------
Superb x 3 joint 10ft carp - 1959 catalogue
Carp Superb x 2 joint " " A238 - 1966 catalogue
New Superb x 2 joint " "
Avon Superb x 2 joint 10ft avon A235 - 1966 catalogue
and Lee Carp.
The 1966 catalogue states:- The "Carp Superb" incorporates all that is best in the latest design in these specialist rods. Based on the highly successful Allcock "New Superb" and the " 'Lee' Carp", it made in built cane with a 28in long slim handle and fitted with sliding reel fittings - - - - etc.
The Carp Superb being 9/- +P.Tax more than the Avon version.

Re: Allcocks Superb
The black/red butt ring whipping looks like the work of an enthusiastic amateur as the tag ends are clearly visible and look rough. Strange.Olly wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2019 3:42 pm I too have an Avon Superb. The whipping for the butt ring seems to be from a "Forcarp" Williams rod - ? But see below.

Re: Allcocks Superb
Well if it was Agatine & broken like the tip - the butt ring could be a replacement.

I have a 1964 New Superb, the butt ring is correct and identical to mine, however as you are already aware the end ring is incorrect.

Thanks for that, thought it was correct but what colour are butt ring whippings on your rod.Barbellina wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2019 8:30 am I have a 1964 New Superb, the butt ring is correct and identical to mine, however as you are already aware the end ring is incorrect.
At present mine is black/red as photo but pretty sure they should be maroon to match others.

Re: Allcocks Superb
All my whippings are original as the rod was mint and unused when I got it. I hope that helps. If you need more detailed images of the whippings and measurements, just let me know.
Oh and happy new year too!
