Stevenstone Top Pool , Devon




A lovely old estate lake Home to many wise old long lean common carp ,
Here's a story I wrote a while back for Carpworld magazine No 25. A fictional story but based on Stevenstone Lake in North Devon. (see traditional lakes section).

Stevenstone was a beautiful old estate lake, spring fed and contained many of the old strain of long lean common carp ranging from six pounds - just under fifteen pounds,,,,,,,,,The Bronze Knights.

have fished Stevenstone for many years up until the late 90's when I moved back to West Sussex. When I first fished the place it was owned my a lovely old gentleman Mr Parnell , so long as you popped in at the end of the day for a chat and let him know how you got on during the day it was free.

The top lake contained rudd to 2lbs , some huge perch to 3 1/2 lbs. tench to 7lbs, big eels and long lean common carp to 15lbs, this is going on the best fish I caught there. During the early 90's I caught some small mirror carp of around 3lbs on my second to last visit I caught one of these fish at 21lbs.

Sadly Mr Parnell passed away towards the end of the 90's and the lake was taken over by his son and family. I hear now on the grapevine that the beautiful old lake has been turned into some sort of assault course for youth training. Platforms for diving off and water-sport activities. The lower pools have had their weed cleared and can still be fished at £10. per day. No night fishing.
