Woodhouse, Leicestershire

Post by MGs »

Although I spent most of my career in the Navy, I was for some of my time attached to the Army. On one of these instances I was sent to Woodhouse in Leicestershire. One advantage was that behind what was the officers mess was a small pond, which was open to fishing by service personnel. The pond contained carp, tench, roach and pike. Looking at google maps, it is still there

There was a small island accessible by a bridge which gave access to some nice swims.

Photos of a summer dawn and winter morning. I loved this pond and was often the only angler, even at the weekends. Anyone know if it is still fishable? Photos taken in 1988 and 89

I will have to look into to this MGs, it's only about 10 miles away from me. I will let you know what I find out.

Although it was owned by the Army (the camp shut down several years ago), there was a local club called Kingfishers who were also allowed to use it.

Just clicked on the link I added, which I have discovered, isn't much use, try this

Lake is at the bottom, the island is visible. It is difficult to find. At the bottom of School Lane there is a gate on the left
(opposite a cottage - an old boy used to hold a log and set of scales for weighing lake records). Through the gate is a
small, narrow field (where people used to park) The lake is on the other side of this (not visible from the road).

I did hold the lake record for carp 6lb 8oz, for a whole week, until it was beaten by 1oz

Like the look of that a lot.

Is it fishable now at all?

I think I'll take a drive over on Saturday and see what I can find out.

Of all of the lakes I have fished over the years, it is the one I have the fondest memories of. Genuinely tranquil, and not over stocked. It made fishing a challenge. Even when I blanked, it was nice to be sat there. The swim on the back of the island (nearest the road) in the shallows between rushes and lilies was fantastic.
