Oiled leather boot care
Oiled leather boot care
Gentlemen, I was lucky enough to receive for Christmas a rather fine pair of oiled leather boots (Barbour) question is what do I use to care for them? A online search has left me confused, the horsey people say to use neetsfoot oil (apparently it's used on tack) others recommend beeswax or a proprietary brand of leather cream. Any thoughts?

What does Barbour recommend Paul? I do own Panama Jack Bota Pan boots, which are oiled but they always supply a cream. I won't use wax as it will be too thick and may cause breathability problems. But any cream that is suitable for leather Gore-Tex boots (to keep the breathability) should be fine.
I do have some of Lowa which I could recommend. Sure that there are UK brands to recommend too of course

Thanks Chris, Barbour just say to use a clear wax polish, think I'll go to a leather shop and see what they recommend.

Have a look at the URAD range of products, I use them to clean and dress tack for my daughters horse plus other things like boots, hats etc.
They have a number of products which can be used on various leathers.
I use the yellow one on my walking boots which works well, but I suspect that one of the others maybe more suitable.
They are not cheap but they are good. Might be worth giving them a call to get the right product.

We used dubbing on our leather football boots, would that do the trick?
Re: Oiled leather boot care
Not a clue Reedling, I don't want them to go shiny, like they way they look at present, I am tempted to use some neetsfoot oil, after all it's made from cows just like my boots, just wondered if anyone had a definitive answer. Barbour are normally very good with there product care advice but seem rather vague in this case.Reedling wrote:We used dubbing on our leather football boots, would that do the trick?

Paul, I use olive oil for my leather knife sheaths and other leather stuff. You have to redo it regularly. It darkens the leather a bit when applied but not too much. I use it also for wooden knife handles. A knife maker gave the tip. After the job you can give a good olive oil rub to your hands, it´s good for the skin, too. I do not know if I would use it for boots, though. A trial on a less valuable pair may be advisable

When in the States I bought a pair of leather Matterhorn boots.
The recommended product to keep them soft, supple and waterproof was mink oil. It comes as a liquid or polish form, the latter being recommended for GoteTex lined boots.
