best way to strip a goose quill of the feather fibres?

I know this is a bit like resurrecting a corpse, but I had to comment, I noticed on the Bay, goose quills were going for almost a pound each. Well I lived in Scotland for a number of years, and used to do the maintenance for a local farmer, every year he reared on average 700 Geese and 2000 Turkeys, and they were hand plucked, all the feathers were then incinerated, can you imagine all that money going up in smoke :Confused:
