I'd been trying, without success, to find details of the Tay patent. Even having the number now doesn't help sadly. Espacenet has no record of Tay or that number........

You might have to go to the patent library I used to go to either Leeds or Birmingham, this was pre internet day. I don't know when Espacenet started listings.
The patent numbers used to be by year until 1916 when they went consecutive.
Tay's was 13116 of 1892 dated July 18, somewhere I do have a copy of the full patent but with thousands of sheets of photocopying in no order it might take me some time to find it.
